Did I ever tell you about my acting class in 1999? I thought it would be fun. At the time, I was just starting to write comedy. I shared my first long comedy script with my acting teacher, which he said he shared with his friends in the business. A short while later I received a notice that I qualified for a government training program. It told me to visit a bureaucrat named Wendy Matso for further instructions. I went to her office and she advised me to submit examples of my creativity to improve my chances for acceptance. I handed over some ink drawings to be photocopied and showed her my new comedy script, which was much better than my first effort. On the strength of this and her own support, I was accepted in early 2000 for a one-year intensive course in web design. My tuition and living expenses were covered by the government.
I learned all my lessons and demonstrated the ability to do the job, but I received little help in securing employment in this field. Instead my life got worse and worse. A personal friend helped me into a temporary web design position in a local non-profit, but my next job was as a cashier at Canadian Tire for a year, and the one after that was as a forklift driver in a waste management facility. By 2007, after three years in the waste management facility, I quit and reapplied for employment insurance. With all the spare time on my hands, I put it into my blogging and songwriting and shared it all online. We all know what happened in 2007: everything I posted onto the internet was stolen by stars and broadcasters and turned into fraud on the TV and radio. But I saw my friend Wendy Matso twice since then. The first time was at a venue in 2007 where every performer seemed to be ripping me off. I approached her in dismay about it, but she seemed to think it was okay. The next time was in 2008 when I was with Nasco Staffing and they were playing a very loud recording of Nonchalant. I vaguely recalled authoring the song, knew how vulnerable I was to fraud, and begged her to protect it for me. So much for that effort.
And now, what's this I'm hearing out there? If I'd have known you had no property I would have charged you...? No property? My portfolio? Everything I draw and write is my property, and if it weren't, its true owners would charge me, not you. I have several thousand examples right in this account from the last ten years. I didn't get charged with anything, but they were incarcerated and punished. If I'm right about the source of this remark, maybe I'll charge her one day - with libel. I should have known that that government training program was too good to be true. The government doesn't hand out plums like that for nothing. They didn't offer me the course to help me, but to help themselves and their friends, like whoever had so much success with those first two stolen plays of mine and Blue Rodeo and Mike Myers and Diamondback and Ellen. They just wanted to put me under a microscope to assess my full potential as their fraud victim. And my offer still stands to anyone who doubts my talent: you can always ask me to draw your portrait in person. I'm right here, and I love to draw.
How did this person gather that I had no property? Did I not word that last post well enough where I said that now my work can't make money for them or me? Did she try to fudge that behind my back to imply that my work is not my property? That's not why my work can't make money for me. My work can't make money for me because no one helps me and everyone hinders me. No one helps me: my bank is stingy about handing out a credit card so I can open an i-tunes account, the broadcasters and industry slaves would all rather help stars to rip me off, my parents are dead and I'm estranged from my siblings, my friends are all struggling with their own problems, lawyers tell me I don't have enough money to sue NBC, police stand me up after I call them for help, and even the ambulance was slow in responding to my 911 call when I got sick from my kidney stone. That's why I can't make money from my work. Of course, certain people saying my work is not my property to explain why I'm not getting paid is calling me thief, so that doesn't help either.
But there's a more positive way to look at all these free works of music and comedy on the internet: the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God active in mankind. It is best illustrated by the selfless act. Selfless acts are works of the Holy Spirit. Charity is the Holy Spirit. Any author who selflessly offers comfort or pleasure in his work is expressing the Holy Spirit. As long as I'm not getting paid for my work, it is selfless, and this makes crimes committed with my work offenses against the Holy Spirit. It makes the fraud they committed with my free songs and free poems and free plays an unholy crime in the most literal sense. It is especially dangerous to children.
